Thank you, Dr. Shoaib and the entire team, for the excellent care and experience throughout my mother’s bilateral knee replacement journey. Our first consultation lasted around 30 minutes, during which Dr. Shoaib listened patiently to my mother and our concerns and explained everything in detail, including the pre-operative assessment, surgery, post-operative care, rehabilitation, and expected recovery. This thorough communication made the decision-making process much easier for us and gave us complete confidence. The entire journey was exceptionally well coordinated. The post-operative physiotherapy provided by the team was highly professional, and Dr. Shoaib followed up regularly to ensure that my mother’s recovery was progressing smoothly. The overall experience was truly exceptional and, in our view, exceeded international standards. I sincerely thank Dr. Shoaib and his entire team for their dedication, professionalism, and outstanding care. I would highly recommend Dr. Shoaib and his team to anyone seeking orthopaedic treatment or surgical procedures.

How Joint Injections Can Help Manage Joint Pain

Whether you have just started feeling pain in your joints or you have been dealing with it for a while, you surely want to know what your treatment options are. People with long-term severe joint pain think that joint replacement treatment in Lahore is their only hope. However, there are several non-surgical options available. Joint injections are one of the most effective treatments for joint pain. They are given directly into the joint to decrease swelling and pain. You will feel the pain is decreased almost immediately after the injection is given.

These injections work as a slow-release treatment to contain the joint pain for several weeks or months after the initial injection. Joint injections are recommended for people who have exhausted other options, such as painkillers, lifestyle changes and physical therapy. However, a combination of all these can also be used to manage the pain and improve joint function. It all depends on the extent of damage to your joint, the intensity of pain, and how your body responds to the treatment.

Causes for Getting Joint Injections

Joint injections can be applied to both the large joints, and the surrounding tissues as well, such as ligaments and tendons. They have the ability to bring down inflammation and allow the structures to heal. These injections can treat a wide range of problems, including but not limited to the following;

Joint injections can also be used as a diagnostic tool to identify the cause of pain. For example, if the injection is given in the hip joint and the person feels pain relief in his leg. Then this indicates the inflammation in his hip joint is the cause of pain in his leg.

Types of Joint Injections

There are different types of joint injections given to help with the joint pain. Your orthopedic specialist will discuss with you the benefits and impact of these injections. These injections are recommended when oral medicine is no longer working, and surgical treatment is not yet required. These include;

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

PRP injections are produced from the patient’s own blood. After drawing blood from the patient, it is processed in the lab to extract platelets from it. Platelets are the blood cells that promote the healing of the damaged structures such as tendons, ligaments, muscles and bones. A concentrated solution of the platelets is prepared and given in the form of injection in the affected area.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections

Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance. It is found in the joints, where it acts as a lubricant and shock-absorbing agent to decrease friction and avoid damaging the structures. Injections of hyaluronic acid directly into the joint space can help restore the lost lubrication. This can lead to decreased pain, improved joint function, and prevent further damage to the surrounding structures.

Steroid Injections

Steroid injections target inflammation in the joint to reduce pain and improve joint function. Steroids are strong anti-inflammatory agents, and when they are given through injections directly into the joint, the results are effective and immediate. Steroid injections can manage pain in a variety of conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, bursitis, gout, shoulder injury, trigger finger, etc.

Step-by-Step Guide to the Joint Injections Treatment

Preparations Before Getting Joint Injections

During your initial consultation, we perform a complete physical examination and review your medical history. We might need to run some tests, including blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, MRI or CT scans, depending on the location and cause of your pain. Joint injections are only recommended if we think they are the right treatment option to manage your pain.

Joint injections are given in an outpatient clinic. The procedure takes only a few minutes, and you can go back to your routine. However, you will need to make some arrangements for someone to drive you home.

Joint Injection Procedure

Before making a decision, we will discuss your options and expectations with you. We explain both the risks and benefits to you so that you can decide for yourself and make an informed decision. You can ask anything about the procedure and clear all doubts. If you agree to the procedure, we proceed.

1

The patient lies down on an x-ray table. The skin is thoroughly cleaned with an antiseptic solution, and a local anesthetic is used to numb the area.

2

The patient stays awake during the procedure.

3

3. Using fluoroscope (x-ray) guidance, the doctor inserts the needle into the joint. The fluoroscope helps the doctor to look inside the joint while injecting needle, in order to reach the right place.

4

Once the needle is in the target location within the joint, the medicine is injected.

5

The procedure is complete and the needle is removed. It all takes only 10-20 minutes. A simple bandage is applied to you and you can go home then.

After The Procedure

You might feel some soreness on the injected site after the procedure. It can be managed by ice, or you can also take an over-the-counter painkiller for it. You will be advised to avoid excessive activity using the injected joint for 48 hours after the procedure.

Pain relief from joint injections can last for several months. It can give you a chance to work with your physical therapist and, if possible, improve your structural integrity. If you feel a significant improvement in the pain, then you might be recommended further injections. If you don’t feel any improvement in your pain with joint injections, then other treatment options, such as joint replacement treatment in Lahore, can be explored.

FAQs

The duration of symptom relief varies depending on factors such as the type of injection, the severity of the condition, and the individual patient's response to treatment. Some patients may experience relief for several months, while others may require periodic injections to maintain symptom control.

Patients with some medical conditions, such as active infections, bleeding disorders, or allergies to the injection components, may not be suitable candidates for joint preservation injections. It's essential to discuss any medical concerns with your healthcare provider before undergoing treatment.

PRP injections utilize concentrated platelets from the patient's blood to promote healing and tissue regeneration. In contrast, hyaluronic acid injections replenish the natural lubrication in the joint to improve mobility and reduce friction.

The number of injections needed varies depending on the type and severity of the condition, as well as the individual patient's response to treatment. Some patients may require a single injection, while others may need more than one injection spaced over several weeks or months.

Typical side effects may include temporary pain or discomfort at the injection site, swelling, and minor bruising. Serious complications are rare but can include infection or allergic reactions.
