Then I met Dr. Ahmed Shoaib is one of the few orthopaedic surgeons in Lahore with both FRCS UK and FEBOT certification. He didn’t just focus on the tumour — he focused on me. Before, During, and After the Arthroscopy Surgery

Preparing for Arthroscopy Surgery

After you are referred for arthroscopic surgery, you will be given a list of instructions to follow. You will be asked about your allergies. A detailed medical history is taken, and you are asked about all the medications or supplements you are currently taking. You will need to tell if you are taking any blood thinners or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as these can affect the procedure and recovery duration.

To prepare you for the arthroscopic procedure, we will advise you not to drink or eat anything after midnight on the day before your surgery. This fasting period is a necessary precaution to prevent any complications during or after surgery.

Preparing for Arthroscopy Surgery

Arthroscopy Procedure

The type of anesthesia used depends upon the type of procedure, which joint is involved, and your health. There are generally three types of anesthesia used;

Arthroscopy Procedure

After giving the anesthesia, the patient is placed in the most appropriate position for the procedure. This can be in the side lying or on the back, depending on the joint. A tourniquet is used to minimize the blood loss and improve the visibility within the joint. Sometimes, a sterile fluid is also used to fill the joint to improve the visibility by expanding the area around it.

During the procedure, a small cut is made, and the arthroscope is inserted into the joint through this cut. The surgeon can see the inside of the joint on a screen. Another cut may be made as well to enter other tools in order to repair the joint. After the joint is repaired, the incisions are closed.

Recovery Period after Arthroscopy Surgery

After the procedure, you are taken to a recovery room, where you are kept under observation until you get stable. The procedure takes about 30 minutes to two hours depending on which type of procedure you are having and on which joint. Recovery time varies in different procedure, but generally they are performed on an outpatient basis, which means you can go home the same day after a few hours.

You can expect some joint pain after surgery, which can be easily managed by pain medication. You can use ice to reduce the swelling. You will not be able to drive for the next 24 hours if you have general anesthesia. Also, you cannot drive if the surgery involves your arm or leg until you have recovered from the effects of the procedure. You may need crutches, splints, or slings after surgery.

It can take from about one week to a few months to recover completely after the surgery, depending on the procedure you had. Many people get back to their normal activity within a few days or weeks. Some athletes and other people in good health can go back to their normal activities after a few weeks under the proper guidance of their healthcare team.

Orthopedic specialists recommend shoulder arthroscopy for various shoulder issues, including torn or damaged cartilage ring (labrum) or ligaments, shoulder instability characterized by excessive joint looseness or dislocation, and torn or damaged biceps tendon.
