When you first come to see us, our orthopedic surgeon performs a full physical exam to analyze your condition. Then, if it is required, we will perform a few tests, including blood tests, X-rays, MRI or CT scans to get a better picture of the damage to your joint.

After we get the results, it will be decided what is the most effective course of action for your treatment and whether or not you need hip replacement surgery. During your consultation, feel free to ask anything about your treatment and clear any confusion.

Hip Replacement Procedure

The hip replacement procedure takes around two hours. Partial hip replacement may need less time and double hip replacement can take more time. The surgery is done under spinal block or general anesthesia, depending on the type of procedure and patient condition.

  • After everything is ready and you are placed in an appropriate position, an incision is made over your hip joint. The location of the incision depends upon which approach your surgeon uses.
  • Now, the damaged parts of the hip joint are removed, and the bones are prepared to place the artificial implant.
  • The artificial implant is then placed. This involves placing a metal stem in your thigh bone and a round head is attached on its upper end. An implant made of plastic, metal, or ceramic is placed in the cup like shape of your hip bone.
  • After the implants are placed, your surgeon will bend your leg to check it functions properly.
  • Your incision is then carefully closed using surgical staples or stitches.

After the Procedure

After your surgery, you will be transferred to our recovery room, where our staff closely monitors your pain and vital signs. After a few hours, when your condition is stable, you will be moved to your room. You will be staying in the hospital for two or three days. During this time, your surgeon visits you regularly to check your condition.

Your physical therapist will visit you after a few hours of your surgery to get you on your feet and start your rehabilitation. Your therapist discuses your case with your surgeon and together they form the rehabilitation timeline for you.
